    Staff training

Congratulations to Charlotte and Gemma who have finished their NVQs.

Charlotte is going on to her next NVQ for her role as Commis Chef; this 13-month course is more detailed and she will need to show an external examiner her knowledge of various aspects of cooking including cuts of meat and types of fish.

We are currently checking out another course for Gemma, this is likely to be a Sommelier course.

Hannah has already passed the first part of her accountancy training and is working hard on the next part.

Well done to all our talented staff for their commitment to ongoing training.

  2. Golden Oldies tour to Jersey

Ottery St Mary’s Golden Oldies took a tour to Jersey for the third year in a row. 22 intrepid footie veterans made the journey this year , with 16 playing in the team.

As usual, we played St Peters FC on Jersey, a grand bunch one and all.

The oldest player was the valiant Ken Mortimer, who at 69 years of age played for a fantastic 10 minutes solid. Well done Ken!

The Golden Oldies play every Thursday night before coming back to The Volunteer for a pint and a bite. All great fun.

    Valentine’s Ball & Banquet

We were pleased to help out again at this year’s Valentine’s Ball & Banquet at the Institute. This raises funds for the Carnival Committee, helping to make sure both the Carnival and Tar Barrels can continue to run.

Our starter was ham hock terrine with homemade piccalilli, homemade bread roll and thyme butter, which went down really well.

The team from Rusty Pig provided a main course of mutton tangine, as well as the dessert, Rocky Road brownie with rose crème fraiche. Chef Robin was away skiing (slacker) so Craig Samson and Joe Draper stepped in to help.

Anyone who was there will know that during the auction, a meal at Rusty Pig for 12 was auctioned off for an amazing £1,000! Well watch this space, next year we’ll include a dinner at the Volley for an auction prize!

Well done to everyone involved, we look forward to hearing news of the grand total raised.

Mike and Jacqui Down at the InstituteHere’s Mike and Jacqui enjoying a well-earned break after finishing their starter!

Look out for other fundraising coming up and don’t forget to dig deep for Ottery’s beloved Carnival and Tar Barrels.
