‘Cheers’ to Devon cider

We’re delighted to now be offering Sandford Orchards cloudy sparkling cider ‘Devon Mist’ on tap at the bar.

According to the cider maker’s website: “Devon Mist is a gentle joy. Unfiltered and expertly blended to create a medium, cloudy, session cider, bursting with rich autumnal fruits, and a long satisfying finish.”

The apples used in the cider are Yarlington Mill, Tremlett’s Bitter and Woodbine.

We’re big fans of Devon Mist and it’s gone down very well with customers – which is why it’s now on tap!

So next time you visit, treat yourself to a pint (or a half!). Perfect to drink when the sun’s out, or when it’s not….

Christmas and New Year Opening Hours

Festive Opening Hours

We are open as normal up to Christmas Eve.

Christmas Day: open for drinks and nibbles from 12 to 2pm.

Boxing Day: Closed.

New Year’s Eve: Open usual hours. Our food is a set menu that will need to be pre-booked.

New Years Day: Open as usual

Trio of Successes!

We’re delighted to announce that as a result of our continued investment into training, three staff members have achieved relevant qualifications.

Hannah Cureton obtained Level 2 in Accounting through the Association of Accountancy Technicians (AAT); Gemma Luscombe gained qualifications in Licensed Hospitality Skills and Licensed Hospitality Operations with BIIAB, the awarding organisation for work based learning providers and employers; and Charlotte Wills, who helps to prepare meals for the pub’s busy restaurant, qualified as Commis Chef with the Institute of Apprentices.

Working in the pub trade is sometimes seen as stop gap for younger people, and traditionally the hospitality trade overall has a fast turnaround in staff. By offering our staff the chance to improve their skills in the area of work they enjoy, we give them something to focus on for the longer term.

Well done to Hannah, Gemma and Charlotte!

We’re In! Good Beer Guide 2019

The Volunteer is thrilled to once again feature in CAMRA‘s Good Beer Guide for 2019.

Regulars will know that we are dedicated to offering great choices to real ale lovers; from local brewers Otter Brewery to Cornish giants St Austell Brewery.

Exmoor Ales, Exeter Brewery, Salcombe Brewery, Hanlons Brewery, Bays Brewery and Branscombe Vale Brewery have all featured at the bar. For our weekly guest beers, visit our Specials page.

We’re delighted that the London has also been included in the Guide; it’s unusual for two pubs from a small town to make it into the book, so well done to Ottery St Mary once again!
